Biodiversity and Conservation

Expertise

  • Board member for two clients ensuring judicious management of private nature reserves.
  • Assisting numerous clients with applications for private nature reserves in terms of the NEMPAA.
  • Successfully engaging with Eskom to re-route transmission lines to avoid high biodiversity areas on a property declared a private nature reserve.
  • Vast experience in dealing with South African biodiversity and permitting regime.
  • Acting for clients in advising on rare species breeding programmes, import and export laws.
  • Assisting clients with complying with disease free buffalo breeding laws.
  • Advising clients regarding stud game breeding- sustainability and compliance.
  • Risk assessments for clients in terms of non-permitted TOPS species- particularly elephants.
  • Drafting compliance documents for clients required under NEMPAA private nature reserve status- such as declaration agreements and management plans.

Advising Matlabas Custodians (a Limpopo based Community rights organisation) regarding high impact developments and biodiversity custodianship.

Board member of Mogolriver Game Farm (Pty) Ltd, (2009 – 2021) a big 5 reserve in the Waterberg. Responsible for all management oversight issues, incorporation of the farm into a greater reserve and had the reserve declared a private Nature reserve in terms of the Protected Areas Act.

Board member of Phuza Moya Private Game Reserve (Pty) Ltd (2017 – present) a private game reserve in the Blyde-Olifants Conservancy. Responsible for all aspects of management oversight on the farm, representing shareholder interests.

Assisted Kranskoppie Boerdery (Pty) Ltd regarding a land rights dispute with a mining company and by order of court had the property declared a private nature reserve in terms of the Protected Areas Act.

Engaging with Eskom regarding optimal routing of transmission lines on Merensky-Foskor and Delta-Epsilon transmission lines.
